Skopje – Macedonian architecture in context

The upcoming exhibition looks at the extraordinary architecture of the Macedonian capital Skopje. Located on the banks of the River Vardar, the city has been settled for more than 2,000 years and has experienced various ruptures in its history. Skopje was also subject to a host of different influences. Shaped by the Ottomans, the city pivoted towards Europe following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire without any radical changes to its appearance. Extensive residential areas with typical panel buildings, major industrial plants and wide boulevards were built after the second world war. In July 1963 a devastating earthquake flattened more than three-quarters of the city. But in a unique display of solidarity, Skopje quickly rose again from the ruins, and this rebuilding programme fundamentally altered the capital’s character. The exhibition focuses on the most significant results of this transformation.
