VIS Vienna Shorts 2017
From June 1st through June 6th VIS Vienna Shorts invites you for the 14th time (and for the first time under its new abbreviated name) to the “wild mixture of cinematic art and ecstatic party” (profil). As always, it includes an “array of fascinating fiction, documentary, and animated shorts” (IndieWire), and “stylish strokes of avant-garde cinema” (Metropol).
This year, Vienna's International Festival for Short Film, Animation & Music Video continues with it's proven combination of competitions, in-focus programs, spotlights, and specials. However, there are some changes: while the METRO Kinokulturhaus, on Johannesgasse, transforms into the festival's headquarters, VIS makes its debut at the famed Filmcasino, where competition programs and the legendary midnight movies will take place. Furthermore, the festival shows its "good understanding for the great independents" (taz) together with the Austrian Film Museum and the Canadian film artist Alexandre Larose.
Larose will honor Vienna with a film program and a masterclass, and is also responsible for this year's festival theme. His image of a wide-open eye is depicted on this year's festival poster and, keeping with the “Trust Me” focus, highlights the visible and the absent, the trustworthy and the deceptive. In five specially curated programs, together with partner festivals in Uppsala (SWE) and Bialystok (POL), VIS explores ideas of trust, it's erosion and populist appropriation, on both a personal and societal level.
In it's second year as an Oscar® Qualifying Festival, VIS sees itself still as "more of a laboratory than an exhibition" (FM4) and, in April, is looking forward to announcing its nearly 100 accepted films for it's four main competitions. In addition, two special guests, a live act in co-operation with the donaufestival, an extended kids program, and many other highlights await! So, don't forget to save the date, because "the great atmosphere created by the festival team, is looking for its peers".
