Camille Henrot. If Wishes Were Horses
The exhibition shines light on the artistic practice of Camille Henrot, a prominent figure among artists of her generation working within the expansive field of contemporary art today. Drawing from a broad range of epistemologies as well as anthropological research, she unravels, fragments, and transforms visual codes into rich registers of information, into hybrid cultural artifacts, and novel material forms. Intuitively navigating across disciplines through a remarkable investigative process, she collects and reflects on multiple pools of thought and imageries to create complex, multi-referential pieces that point to timely political, economic, and social issues. The situation is often seen as timeless in the same breath as topical. Largely left open to individual interpretation, her work persistently appreciates and leaves space for a variety of alternate or contradictory readings. Her playful and poignant approach probes what it means to be human.
Camille Henrot’s exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz will be the first solo institutional presentation of her oeuvre in Austria. Developed in close collaboration with the artist, the project in Vienna will consist entirely of new works produced for the occasion and in response to the architecture of the space. Systems of thoughts or beliefs based on binary oppositions such as masculine/feminine, domination/submission, provider/dependent, exterior/interior are explored and portrayed. A large site-specific installation, several sculptures, and a film, are among the pieces included, conceived from a greater investigation on the human propensity for dependency. The heartfelt and harrowing relationships people have with things or constructs that they depend on (be it as diverse as technology, love, religion, healthcare, government, or pets) are revealed and retold by Henrot in both an intimate and universal manner.
