How will we work?

An exhibition by the VIENNA BIENNALE 2017

An exhibition by the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the Applied Innovation Lab AIL; curated by Anab Jain, co-founder and Director, Superflux, London, and Professor, University of Applied Arts Vienna; and Gerald Bast, President, University of Applied Arts Vienna; Curatorial assistant: Martina Schöggl

Our working environment is changing. Innovations in technology, such as rapidly advancing digitalization and the tremendous developments in robotics and artificial intelligence are exerting enormous influence over our everyday working lives. Some studies even suggest that up to 50 percent of the currently existing jobs will break away in the next 20 years. We have to rethink work — in its economic, social, and philosophical dimensions.

The exhibition THE FUTURE OF WORK will address, in both analytical and speculative ways, future forms and functions of human work, particularly targeting the role of the creative sector. With a view to the disappearance of seemingly “traditional jobs,” it will raise the question about who will, and should, actively participate in redefining the terms work and future.
