Mozart in Mozarthaus. Highlights of the Composer’s Everyday Life

Mozart lived for over two and a half years at Domgasse 5 (called Schulerstraße 8 at the time). From 1784 to 1787 he found artistic and social recognition in Vienna; he experienced that in this very apartment, which still exists today and has been turned into a museum.

The aim of the exhibition is to show Mozart’s life as an artist and composer during this important period through selected highlights and high-caliber exhibits (original manuscripts, first editions, documents, contemporary pictures). Mozart created major works in this apartment like “The Marriage of Figaro” and the Piano Concerto in D minor KV 466 but also spontaneous compositions for musical entertainment like the Horn Duets KV 487. This is where he met with all the major composers and artists of the time, led by Joseph Haydn, and took pleasure in the only visit by his father to Vienna. In this house he performed for Haydn the string quartets dedicated to him. Mozart prepared his most successful public concerts here, for which he had composed new piano concertos. His everyday life also included dealing with publishers and teaching students. In spite of the high income from commissioned works, concerts, publications and tuition, it was here that he suffered his first known money problems.

The exhibition provides a concentrated view of perhaps Mozart’s most important years and shows a human side of this exceptional composer.
