„A magnifique Musique!“ And: „You would never imagine that such a small head could contain anything so great!“ These were the enraptured reactions of Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria, who commissioned Idomeneo, when he first heard the work. Premièred in 1781, the opera combines elements of both French and Italian styles, and tells a story of power and sovereignty, of guilt and overcoming it. The work has a
complex performance history that includes a number of revisions and adaptations, among others by Mozart himself, by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, and by Richard Strauss.
