Johann Sebastian Bach: Parts I, II, and VI (Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248) (1734–1735)
Timpani, flutes, oboes, and trumpets: Bach's Christmas Oratorio begins with these instruments before the strings and choir join in with the words “Jauchzet, frohlocket” (Rejoice, be glad). With its rich instrumental ensemble, festive choruses, and luminous arias, the work sets the mood for the celebration of Christ's birth—a magnificent Baroque praise of God. This time, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra will perform under the baton of Fabio Biondi, founder and director of the Europa Galante ensemble. The violinist and conductor has already thrilled audiences at the Vienna Konzerthaus on several occasions with his rousing interpretations of Baroque works as part of the “Resonanzen” series.
