In the salon with Adele Strauss
Business needs strong women - even in entertainment.
An evening with Ulrike Steinsky
Concept: Kurt Lauermann
She insisted on being addressed as "Mrs. Johann Strauss". Adele Strauss (1856-1930) was the third and last wife of the musical genius, but also his muse, energetic manager, concerned nurse and wise psychotherapist. Born into a middle-class Jewish family in Vienna in the same year as Sigmund Freud, Adele ensured that the ageing international superstar had a well-ordered private life and continued to enjoy artistic and financial success. 30 years younger than her "Schani", she outlived him by another 30 years, working tirelessly for the timeless, unique work of the king of waltzes and operettas. And he had strange quirks, peculiar preferences, fears and compulsions, premonitions, doubts and increasingly also physical problems before he died in Vienna in 1899 at the age of 73. The fact that the tough, successful woman was disparaged in the men's business as "Cosima in 3/4 time" may have affected her, but did not prevent her from working hard to obtain royalties and extended copyrights.
