ROMAbaron is a modern version of one of Strauss' best-known operettas from the perspective of Saffi, a young Romni. With a text by Simonida Selimovic and an orchestra combining western and non-European instruments, Alireza Daryanavard’s work oscillates between spoken drama, live music and video sequences to highlight issues including identity, class thinking, Anti-Romanyism and inequality.
