25 October 2025 is Johann Strauss’ 200th anniversary. Awarded the freedom of the city in 1884, his melodies are an indelible part of Vienna’s cultural life. For marital reasons, he became a citizen of the duchy of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in 1886, a move that his home city resented for some time. But since 1945 latest, the Blue Danube waltz has been Vienna’s signature tune. After a ceremony in his honour at Vienna City Hall, there will be concerts as a fitting tribute to this great musician.
