Winner of the 2010 Olivier Award for New Play, The Mountaintop is a gripping reimagination of the night before the assassination of the civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. Portraying hope and visions of social change, The Mountaintop also explores being human in the face of inevitable death.

After his acclaimed sermon "I've Been to the Mountaintop" on 3rd April, 1968, an exhausted Martin Luther King retires to room 306 of the Lorraine Motel for the night while a storm rages outside. Ordering room service, his cup of coffee is brought by a young maid Camae who immediately attracts King’s attention. To begin with, the conversation between the two is filled with flirtation and humor but, through the night, slowly progresses to something much deeper. Camae prompts King to confront his life, his past, and the plight and future of his people. When the mysterious woman reveals her true identity, Martin Luther King must reflect on his legacy and his responsibility for the civil rights cause.
