In 2025, Vienna will celebrate the 200th birthday of the "Waltz King" Johann Strauss with a veritable drum and trumpet display of events. In many of the sparkling, fast-paced polkas in the bouquets (Eduard's perhaps even more so than Johann's), however, a rather small instrument is at the forefront: the piccolo. You can probably bet that Nikolaus Habjan will also slip into its role as an (amplified) artificial piper at this year's New Year's Eve gala and thus mingle with the Wiener Symphoniker. The many acoustic devices used in the pieces, which often depict the "blessings" of technical progress, will certainly give him ample opportunity for trenchant performances. You will be surprised which guests Nikolaus Habjan will welcome when he blows the whistle for the "Strauss year" 2025 at the same time as the final whistle of the old year!
