Anton Webern: Quartett op. 22

Anton Webern dedicated his saxophone quartet to the architect and loyal patron of the Viennese school Adolf Loos for his 60th birthday – perhaps because he was aware of Loos’ inclination towards contemporary jazz music, which gradually found its way to Vienna during the 1920s. However, there are no traces of jazz influence in the piece – similarly to other works of the evening, Webern only explores the saxophone’s timbral properties. The sixth piano piece from Schönberg’s op. 19 is a sonorous tombeau for Gustav Mahler.
