The Kunsthistorisches Museum presents in the exhibition Rembrandt – Hoogstraten. Color and Illusion a diversity of works by the Dutch Baroque painter Rembrandt, never before seen in Vienna. For the first time, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669) and his oeuvre are presented from the perspective of his talented pupil Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627–1678).

In his treatise on the art of painting published in 1678, van Hoogstraten reflected on his time in Rembrandt’s studio. As a direct witness, he provides us with unique insights into the master’s creative process and work: his workshop practice, training methods, and approaches to the theory of art. The exhibition celebrates the extraordinary force of colour and the astonishing illusionistic skills in the work of Rembrandt and van Hoogstraten, giving visitors the opportunity to encounter the works of both artists through the eyes of a seventeenth-century art connoisseur.

The exhibition includes around sixty paintings, drawings and prints from the Kunsthistorisches Museum's Picture Gallery and from important international lenders.
