Beginning June 16, 2023, the Kiesler Foundation will present the exhibition Gregor Schmoll. Puparium: Atelier/Studio, which presents a very special exploration of the estate of the Austro-American multi-talent Frederick Kiesler:

Austrian artist Gregor Schmoll's installation-staged photo series references photographs that Frederick Kiesler had taken by U.S. photographer Percy Rainford in Marcel Duchamp's New York studio in 1945. Rainford's photographs are at once a documentary staging and a staging of the documentary of Duchamp's studio.

Kiesler assembled a "space poem" from Rainford's images, which show the studio from absurd angles, as a tribute to Duchamp for a special issue of View art magazine.

The contact prints from this series are now in the archive of the Kiesler Foundation and are extraordinary testimonies to one of the most fascinating artist friendships of the international avant-garde - that between Marcel Duchamp and Friedrich Kiesler. The pictures served Gregor Schmoll as a starting point for his playful-ironic re-staging and photographic depiction of his own studio. The play with media refractions, the question of how to view photography or its original character plays a major role in Puparium: Atelier/Studio. With his paraphrase, Schmoll proves to be a master of conceptual photography, reenactment, and self-staging.
