The Imperial Carriage Museum at Schönbrunn is embarking on a search for clues to one of the most famous and mysterious dresses in our history and will be presenting the first exciting results from May 12, 2023.
In 1989, the Kunsthistorisches Museum was able to acquire a magnificent train that had been kept by the descendants of Empress Elisabeth for over a hundred years as part of her wedding dress. Since 2008, it has been on permanent display in the Imperial Carriage Museum as part of the Sisi Trail.

A portrait of the empress from 1857, which was rediscovered in 2021, has now preserved the appearance of the corresponding dress, making it possible to reconstruct the ensemble with the aid of state-of-the-art technology. The spectacular result is now being presented to the public for the first time - together with the painting.
The presentation will be supplemented by a film documenting the exciting search for clues surrounding the mysterious wedding dress: Since its appearance has not yet been documented by any secure sources, it can neither be clearly proven nor ruled out at this point in time that Sisi actually wore the dress depicted in the painting at the wedding ceremony in the Augustinerkirche in Vienna on April 24, 1854. The search for reliable sources will continue in the coming months.
