Works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Anton Webern, Leoš Janáček
The string quartet genre is predestined for playing in a small circle, for communicating secret musical messages. Anton Webern realizes this idea most consistently with his subtle miniatures. Leoš Janáček explicitly emphasizes the message character of his quartet in its title - he characterized his piece as a collection of "love letters". Finally, in his monumental late work, Ludwig van Beethoven combines internalization with tremendous musical lust and leads the evening to a brilliant finale.
