Domenico Scarlatti: Salve Regina
Johann Sebastian Bach: Magnificat D major BWV 243
René Jacobs celebrates festive Advent music with the Sing-Akademie from Zurich and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and mouth and deed and life) heralds the impending birth of Jesus with the sound of trumpets, before culminating in the well-known chorale Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring. In his Salve Regina, a passionate setting of the Marian hymn, Domenico Scarlatti takes a very different path. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat is based on the Canticle of Mary in the Gospel of Luke and is an epic musical expression of divine worship with timpani and trumpets.
