Visionary Spaces. Walter Pichler meets Frederick Kiesler
The main gallery of the Belvedere 21 provides the setting for a hypothetical dialogue between Frederick Kiesler (1890–1965) and Walter Pichler (1936–2012), two avant-garde artists of different generations and disciplines. The basis for this dialogue stems from a visit by the Austrian sculptor to the Austro-American architect's studio that took place in New York in 1963. Pichler, whose sculptures in the early 1960s were proclaimed as alternative living spaces and provided a decisive impetus that also found reception internationally, meets Kiesler, who, following his groundbreaking exhibition displays and architectural visions of the 1920s, increasingly turned to sculpture. They both share a fundamentally critical view of traditional spatial concepts and the courage to break established norms – particularly in their cross-disciplinary approach to artistic thinking and creation.
Utopian, anthropocentric, and biomorphic living spaces; prosthetics and perception; spirituality and performativity; design: the exhibition aims to demonstrate the parallels between the oeuvres of these two artists, as well as to highlight aspects of their work that continue to be relevant today.
