Winterreise

Oliver Welter, musician and singer of the Austrian cult band Naked Lunch, allied himself with the pianist, sound and performance artist Clara Frühstück for this euphoric border crossing.
The result, commissioned by the Burgtheater, is a new interpretation of "Winterreise" that is as radical as it is emotionally moving, and which was celebrated with sustained standing ovations and enthusiastic media reactions at its premiere in June 2021 at the Akademietheater.
Perhaps a turning point in the reception of this existential masterpiece by Franz Schubert and Wilhelm Müller, whose eerily beautiful essence Welter and Frühstück get to the bottom of with a growing understanding of pop and passionate precision. A moving journey straight into the dark soul of the world's most famous song cycle.
