Wien wird Bundesland

The exhibition in the foyer of the Vienna Library in the City Hall sheds light on the prehistory, background and effects of Vienna's development into an independent federal state and provides insights into the process of separation, which was not only a political and legal but also a cultural break. The advertising material for the elections to the Lower Austrian Parliament and the Vienna City Council in May 1919 vividly reflects the social climate. A showcase portrays the most important actors in this process, above all Robert Danneberg, the leading constitutional expert of the Social Democratic Labor Party.

Objects from around 1920 are presented, including maps and plans as well as documents on the buildings and organizations that were disputed in the separation negotiations. In addition, contemporary drawings and drawings created exclusively for the exhibition by Wolfgang Ammer convey the mood of the time.
