Carmen
Production and stage design: Franco Zeffirelli
Costumes:Leo Bei |
In opera literature the irresistible seductress Carmen is regarded as the female counterpart of the character of Don Giovanni: she, too, finally perishes as a result of her passion and sensuality. On the other hand, Carmen is the archetype of all women who completely cast off the shackles of social convention in order to shape the course of their own lives. Carmen was to be Georges Bizet's last opera; though certainly his most popular work for the stage, he never lived to see its success, which set in only after the Vienna premiere.
